NAS

After a few weeks and a bit of work the new NAS is finished (as it can be for the moment). So we have 2-2T drives for storage and a microITX 1.6G dual core board. I added it to my fstab in linux so they automount and display in my conky config. Like to thank Mr. Lee for his assistance with donation of the board & case and a single 2T drive. Mr. Vandervort for the other 2T drive and certainly not least of all Mr. Gordon, my buddy from the local mission for the SATA cable I was short, the 4G eSSD card and the wireless card (seems he always has what you need in a pinch) :)

So here are the specs:
Case: I-Win MiniITX case w 200w supply
Board: Intel D510M0 miniITX mainboard
OS Drive: Intel z-u130 4G
SATA Slot 1: WD Green 2T w 64M cache
SATA Slot 0: WD Green 2T w 32M cache
the DDR2 I donated from my primary machine and is ADATA DDR2 800 (2x1G)

The OS: FreeNAS

So now that I have that done its back on to the Android OS. My work schedule this week is going to be REALLY hectic so Im not sure if I will be able to get anything at all done. The wireless is in the thing via mini PCIe slot but I honestly cant remember which card it is ATM but I am not using it for interface purposes yet. The original NAS was using EIDE drives rather than SATA and an older 10M LAN card (ugh) I will most likely be revamping that for a ghost server for ‘alternate’ OS installs like Windows and system diagnostics. Now.. if I could just get the donation thing going for the D2 I’d be content for a good time and my only goal is my bike…

Ive also done a quick and dirty way to automount.

As of late..

So, as of late here is what Ive been into…
Rebuilt my NAS using FreeNAS and started its internal TFTP server to enable network booting. I managed to install the latest syslinux which allows for ISO booting so now I have a boot menu with multiple linux network installs that I have been known to use.

Next is to compile a liveXP ISO (Yea, I could use Win7 but its a hog) with basic tools so that I can diagnose machines here at home via network boot and possibly repair or manipulate files AV scans etc.

Last of course it to use PXE to install (automated install) XP SP3 for restoration of machines that are beyond hope and will require a wipe. I plan on doing a complete how to but as my time is limited these days and to be honest.. my health is as well we’ll see if I can get it finished before I am :P

Work..

Got up and as I got ready to walk out the door rebooted the machine and ‘glitch’! Looking like I might go back to karmic.. at least there I knew where I stood. Can’t mess with it till the weekend so I’m working off the laptop *damnit*

Updated..

Well, I have now installed a 40G SSD drive and installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Boot time per bootchart varies between 9.5 sec and 10.07 sec. I split the drive evenly and also have a 500G SATA 2 drive which I split in 1/2 and made the first partition /home. Only issue I had was with NVidia Drivers which required me to edit GRUB and add some things to the blacklist. Of course it took me 3 installs to get it right but I never claimed to be a genius in Lin…

So far though everything looks good.. nice speed and response but the real question is.. do I install Win as a secondary OS on the other 1/2 of the SSD?

Its Coming!!

Well tomorrow is the official release of Ubuntu Lucid. Me being the stickler I am and phobic about clutter I will be redoing my ‘old and busted’ desktop by making a backup of my /home partition and doing a clean and shiny install. Already did it on my laptop using the RC and it boots in 12 seconds using the internal SATA drive so it should do wonderfully on my desktop.

*For those uninformed the goal of Lucid was to decrease boot time to under 15 seconds beyond the post screen and to incorporate optimisations for SSD drives.

As for the reason I erected this site (Droid follow ups and experimentation). I wont be setting up any kind of dev environment til that is done as there is less than no point in bothering when I am going to kill a system.

What to do..

So I figure I now have a Droid and I must admit its one hell of a toy. So.. I figure I’ll hang any ‘projects’ here and notes.
